Your nonprofit organization plays a vital role in providing resources to your community. Despite the significant impact of your work, the organization may still need help gathering support through your website. If you need to increase donations, volunteer sign-ups, or community engagement, your home page is an excellent place to start! Remember, your site visitors are each on their own journey. You should demonstrate how your organization fits into that journey to create lasting impact with them. Here are several elements to consider for inclusion in your home page:

Heroes are superheroes:

The hero section of a home page, located just under the main navigation, is a crucial element of your website. It’s not just a space for visuals but a powerful tool to start telling your brand story to make a lasting impression on your visitors.

  • State a clear description of what you do and what benefits the audience will experience when they interact with you.
  • Use custom graphics, photos, and videos here to differentiate you. Stock media is flat and reflects poorly on the organization.  Investing in custom imagery will elevate the engagement. We advise against using a rotating photo carousel here. There are too many calls to action, and your mission could become unclear to users.
  • Include a call to action (CTA) to tell users what action you want them to take next.

Audience First Content:

  • Write titles about your audience’s journey, not about you. Describe the transformation the audience will have when engaging with you.
  • It’s OK to simplify content. Flat out state what you want visitors to do.
  • Create 3-step process to engaging with visitors so they can easily see the path to impact. If you don’t have one, describe what increasing levels of engagement look like and find a way to illustrate that.
  • Set up links to additional information on other pages and don’t forget about your CTA to get them there. CTAs should be clear so the user knows exactly where they will go when they click.

Create helpful sub-navigation features:

Sure, you want your website to look beautiful, but you also want visitors to find the information they need efficiently. Good navigation is an essential feature of a well-built website. Consider adding an audience-based sub-navigation if you have multiple audiences to make your site even more user-friendly. Users will save time by getting to content created specifically for them.

Use Testimonials:

  • Testimonials add social proof to your site.
  • When adding testimonials, think about the client’s journey. Use testimonials describing why they visited your website and their ultimate transformation after working with you.
